Tips for Writing a Resume

Making sure that you have a good resume is important. Here are some tips you should follow when writing your resume.

Keep it short. Your resume should be one page. Sometimes it's okay to use two pages, depending on the type of job you're applying for, how much experience you have, and the employer.

List your most recent job first. Put your jobs in order, starting with your current or most recent job and ending with the oldest job.

Include basic information about each job. Include the company name, city/town and state, employment dates, your job title, and your responsibilities.

Talk about your major accomplishments at each job. Make sure you list accomplishments like "recognized as Employee of the Month;" "handled 60 calls per day;" and "responsible for maintaining inventory."

Use action words. Use words like "created," "managed," "ran," "handled," and "answered."

List your awards. Include awards you got in school for academic excellence, sports, clubs, etc.

Include other experiences. If you don't have a lot of job experience, be sure to include volunteer experiences.

Elaine, in today's economy many people are changing careers. Some people are changing because of a layoff and others by choice. When writing your resume don't focus on your previous jobs--focus on your experience. Highlight all of the skills you have that will be beneficial to a career in advertising. This type of resume is called a "functional" resume. You can create a functional resume using the Career Coach resume builder. I hope this helps.

Laurie, we have found, in very rare instances, that the "Create PDF" link doesn't correctly display a resume. I would recommend that you try that link one more time. Once you generate a PDF, you can print it or save it on your computer. Hope this helps.

I used the template to create a resume but now I can't figure out how to get a usable copy of it. I select the "create a pdf" but that doesn't work. Any suggestions?

I need to know how to write a resume if I am changing field of work. Right now my jobs are all financial/accounting related, but I wish to move into advertising. I don't know how to propose or put into action that kind of resume or respond to the interview question, "If you were working in accounting for so long, why do you now want to be in advertising?"
